LATHAM SQUARE PILOT PLAZA
Associate Designer + project manager with Rebar
Latham Square Pilot Plaza reimagined downtown Oakland's notion of public space. Installed for 1 year, this plaza tested out a city's efforts to construct viable solutions for a more pedestrian and bike friendly in a bustling, downtown business corridor. Modular green space and reconfigurable urban furniture made of repurposed city infrastructure and salvaged wood defined this pilot plaza's ability to be rearranged to accommodate a variety of events such from daily lunch breaks for city workers to fashion shows, live music, and a traveling library.
Latham Square Pilot Plaza was a 1-year pilot project implemented through City of Oakland's Public Works and Pavement to Parks program to install, test, and evaluate community experience of civic designs made for car-free zones, inclusive/community gathering space, modular/mobile green space. Information and feedback collected through a series of community workshops, surveys, and online comments on effectiveness of the mobile infrastructure, landscaping/shade, & impact on businesses and community experience informed the permanent design constructed in 2015.
